Sept. 16, 2009 Day 19

Our last campsite on the island. Cool morning. 9c inside and 7 outside. We all decided to shower this morning, because we were planning to take the night ferry off the Island at 11:30 pm. So, no showers tonight. Unfortunately, the outside door to the showers, and the windows in the showers did not close. Sooo, the inside temp. was the same as the outside. Brrrrr.
We made pancakes for breakfast and we left South Brook at 10 to start our 300 k. trek back to the ferry. We decide to sleep in the chairs on the boat. Jennie wanted a dormitory sleeper---interesting---50 people in one room---all snoring--good luck with that Jennie!!
Originally, we had planned to take the 15 hr ferry from Argentia. I asked the group if we could take the short ferry 2x, even though it meant driving all the way across Nfld back to Port Aux Basques. An extra 700 k. and 2 days travel. Turned out it was the better choice because the Argentia ferry only goes on Saturdays in the off season. Plus it costs 325. more. (But now we spent it on gas and one more camping night) lol. (((6 hrs. on a boat is better than 15 especially with all the wind they have here))). In the 8 days we've been on this Island, we only had 1/2 day of rain. It's been great. Sad to leave. The locals are sooo proud of their home. Can't imagine any place more gorgeous on this trip than Nfld.

On route, we stopped for gas, and decided to order our ferry tickets. Oops-they're booked full for the next 2 nights. So, we had no choice but to take the day ferry again. That would mean wasting a day. Now, we had time to do some touring again. In Pasedena we stopped at Meyer's Minerals. The owner, a archaeologist gave us a tour of his shop.

My souvenir purchases. Immy and Peter bought a beautiful clock, and Jennie also jewellery.

Rocks he used to cut and make jewellery.

While we were shopping, Marcel took the time to fix the back view mirror and the radio. Both had lost power today. The pantry door also got an attitude adjustment.
Taken through the window.

We did a supper stop, and at 5:30 arrived at the same campsite we stayed at the first night on the island. Grand Codroy campground in Doyles, Nfld. Blogging still was not possible, so we found another walking trail. Only the 3 sisters went this time.

This trail was in a figure 8. The whole trail had arrows with saying on them.

The sunset was beautiful. You can imagine with all the water surrounding us, we saw many such sunsets.

Immy turning to pose for a picture.

At night we did a puzzle. Usually we are all in bed by 9. Our days are pretty full.

  1. How many vehicles does the short ferry take compared to the long one? :)

  2. The short ferry is 179 meters in length and approximately 350 cars and 1200 passengers , while the large ferry is 203 meters in length and carries 531 cars. We had the large ferry on the short run back to NS. So, that was a bonus, except that the main floor was the 7th level instead of the 3rd. So, a lot more swaying!!

  3. Absolutely beautiful, I really wish I could have found a little hiding spot and tagged along. One of these years Doug and I will have to do a similar trip.
